Ah, camping, one of my favorite things to do. When my family packs up and heads out to the wilderness, we have a lot of fun. However, camping can be hot, stressful and a lot of work. When we went camping last week, I think 'happy campers' would be the last way to describe us.
Where did the phrase even come from? Maybe it's just because I'm in Texas, but any activity done outdoors for the majority of the day does not result in 100% of happiness. I do enjoy the activity and look forward to the next trip, but when I think about being sticky and hot, sitting motionless in my camp chair praying desperately for just a small breeze, happiness is the last thing on my mind.
I would say that the phrase refers to children, but even my kiddos, who love the outdoors, reach their limit after a while. Overall, when I think back over our trip, I recall fond memories of enjoyment and fun, but I would never say we were happy campers. Perhaps we should change the phrase. Any suggestions? Happy home stayers, maybe?
Have a cool summer and happy camping!
